This book takes place over three summers that the author lived on an uninhabited island on Dore Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This was the base of operations during his study of Newcastle disease on a breeding colony of double-crested cormorants and American white pelicans. The author describes the transition from city life to camping alone in pristine boreal forest. His fascination with nature is reflected in the descriptions of the flora and fauna he encounters in the course of his daily work. In addition, photos and excerpts from field notes made during visits to the breeding colony, provide detailed insights about the development of cormorants and pelicans from egg to fledgling. When the Ice Goes out on Dore Lake will appeal to readers with and interest in natural history, and to those who value ecological integrity of forested landscapes.
